The ACT State Emergency Service has welcomed 70 new recruits into units across Canberra

70 new volunteers will join the ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) in time for the 2020-21 storm season.

The new recruits are prepared with the knowledge to be first responders to incidents involving floods and storms, as well as provide crucial support to other emergency services.

The current La Niña Alert predicts wetter conditions across the capital this season, which may see the volunteers’ newfound skills in storm and water damage, land-based floodwater rescue, safety and first aid well utilised.

As a result of the new cohort comprising of 32 women, ages ranging from 18-70, and the range of backgrounds – the service was commended on its diversity within the Agency.

The new faces will join nearly 400 everyday Canberrans volunteering with the service.
