Legislation affecting the
ACT State Emergency Service

On 14 May, the former Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Mr Bill Wood MLA, presented the "Emergencies Bill 2004" to the ACT Legeslative Assembly.

The Emergencies Act, 2004 established the Emergency Services Authority on 1 July 2004.

Section 31 of the Act covers the appointment and responsibilities of the Chief Officer of the SES.

Ss.56 to 59 of the Act covers the establishment, functions and operation of the SES.

The authority is responsible for the overall strategic direction and management of the State Emergency Service. Day to day performance of functions remains under the direct management of the Chief Officer of the SES who is ultimately responsible to the Commissioner for the performance of the SES.
