History of the ACT State Emergency Service

The history of the ACT State Emergency Service starts with the raising of a Civil Defence Corps during the 2nd World War.

Early in the 1970s the name was changed to the ACT Emergency Service.

Early in the 1990s the ACT emergency community formed the Emergency Management Group and a few years later this became the ACT Emergency Services Bureau. The ACT Emergency Service formed part of the Bureau.

On 1 July 2004 the Bureau became the ACT Emergency Services Authority, one component of which is the ACT State Emergency Service.
