Things you can do - BEFORE A SEVERE STORM OR FLOODING

Things you can do to prepare yourself and your home in the event of a severe storm and possible local flooding.

Quick guide for householders.

  • Make an emergency kit
  • Do a first-aid course
  • Write a storm and flood plan
  • Check your insurance
  • Trim trees clear of house
  • Clear yard of loose objects
  • Clean roof, gutters and downpipes
  • Identify your nearest floodsafe location

On Days of High Risk:

  • Shelter pets and animals
  • Shelter vehicles or cover with blankets
  • Disconnect electrical appliances
  • Consider taping or covering large windows
  • If flooding is possible stack possessions higher up - on beds, in the roof
  • In rural areas consider moving stock to higher ground
