The Strategic Bushfire Management Plan

The Strategic Bushfire Management Plan is a new initiative within Australia that is addressing a highly complex subject. It provides a strategic approach to the management of bushfires in the ACT for a 10 year period.

Version 1 of the ACT Strategic Bushfire Management Plan establishes the basis and framework for the efficient, effective and comprehensive management of fire and fire-related activities for protecting human life, property, assets and the environment.

The over-arching strategic objective is to minimise the likelihood of bushfires and their negative consequences.

Version 1 of the Plan, issued in January 2005, includes guidelines and actions for residents to take to help reduce hazardous fuel loads that contribute to bushfire threats.

The plan can be downloaded as a PDF file (3MB) HERE

The Plan will help reduce the occurrence and impact of bushfire through risk reduction, readiness, response, and recovery across all agencies and land tenures.

The strength of the Plan arises from the partnership and shared responsibility between the community, land managers and the Emergency Services Authority. It will provide information on the principles, objectives and resources to be applied in the ACT.

The Plan provides the basis for:

  • Bushfire hazard assessment and risk analysis;
  • Bushfire prevention, including hazard reduction; and
  • Agency and community preparation and response in relation to bushfires.

The Plan includes:

  • Strategic objectives;
  • Description of the bushfire environment;
  • Known bushfire causes Risk assessment of factors contributing to cause and spread;
  • Vulnerable private and public assets;
  • Prevention, preparedness, response and recovery strategies for bushfires; and
  • Statement of Resources required.
