Road Awareness and Accident Prevention
Through the Road Awareness and Accident Prevention program (RAAP) we aim to prevent accidents through greater awareness.
In Australia, 17 - 24 year olds account for 28% of all road fatalities, despite making up only 12 per cent of the population.
Aims of the RAAP Program
The RAAP program aims to cut the statistics by providing year 11 students with a hard-hitting insight into what happens to road accident victims and the aftermath from injuries and fatalities. The program is delivered by ACT Fire-fighters.
Our aims are to:
- Increase awareness through education using practical demonstrations and insight into motor vehicle entrapment; and
- Decrease the rate of teenage death and injury in traffic accidents.
Stage 1
Practical demonstration of road accident rescue equipment and techniques
The first stage of the RAAP program is a practical demonstration of road accident rescue equipment. Fire-fighters use a car wreck to demonstrate rescue techniques and show how victims would be freed from accident scenes.
Stage 2
Classroom presentation
Experienced fire-fighters explain the realities of accidents, detailing the effects of injuries and the grief caused. Real life footage is shown and photographs and media clips reinforce the devastating effects of road accident trauma. Lets stop the carnage.
