Deliberately Lit Fires Warning
A fire safety message from the ACT Fire Commissioner
Dear ACT Resident
The frequency of apparent deliberately lit fires in the ACT has for some time, been of concern to the ACT Fire Brigade. The Brigade and the Australian Federal Police are now working closely together in an effort to develop appropriate strategies to address this issue.
Firefighters from your local stations have also been examining a range of prevention and preparedness strategies that may assist you in minimising the risk and impact of these types of fires. Please take the time to review their recommendations.
Recommendations to Consider:
- Minimise the amount of goods stored in open carports;
- Stow wheelie-bins and trash-packs out of sight;
- Put wheelie-bin out at kerb on the morning of collection;
- Install a motion sensor in the carport;
- Know location of and clear around fire hydrants;
- Know how to isolate electricity supply to the house in event of fire;
- Know how to isolate gas supply to house;
- Install smoke alarms under eaves near fences and carport;
- Purchase appropriate fire extinguisher;
- Clear all leaves, branches and dead material from around fences and gutters;
- Move furniture away from brush fences;
- Consider replacing shade-cloth with non combustible shade protection;
- Ensure garden hoses are in good condition and can reach all areas of your property; and
- Have an escape plan and establish assembly points in case of emergency;
