Fire Education

The ACT Fire Brigade conducts an extensive fire education program in ACT schools.

The ACT Fire Brigade Fire Ed program commenced in 1998. The program was sourced from Victoria's Metropolitan Fire Brigade, who are acknowledged for the original development, and then modified for local content.

The program is presented to kindergarten children in all ACT schools by the station crews.

There are 5 parts to the program. They are:

  • Good Fires / Bad Fires - What makes them different

  • Firefighters are your friends - Firefighters are an authority figure and can be looked upon in a bad light. The class teacher is dressed in firefighters uniform. The children see the teacher, who they trust, become a firefighter and hopefully this dispels any fears. At this time the children are also introduced to a firefighter wearing full breathing apparatus.

  • Stop, Drop, Roll - What to do if your clothes catch on fire.

  • Get Down Low and Go, Go, Go - What to do if you are in a smoke filled area.

  • 000 Emergency - the concept of the '000' emergency phone call is explained.

We also quiz children on their knowledge of their home phone number and address.

Truck Visit - This is a reward. A visit outside to the fire truck.

All children who go through the program receive a Fire Ed. certificate.
