Lateral Recruitment
The ACTFB is not currently recruiting for firefighters either base line or lateral.
The previous application process that commenced in October 2007 has NOW CLOSED.
General Recruitment Information
The recruitment process into the ACT Fire Brigade involves successful completion of a number of stages. These are as follows:
1. Written application Applicants are assessed on their response to a number of selection criteria. Those assessed as suitable will be invited to progress to the next stage:
2. Examination Applicants will undertake a series of assessments in the following areas:
- Verbal reasoning;
- Numerical reasoning;
- Spatial reasoning;
- Abstract reasoning; and
- Written assessment.
3. Physical Testing Following successful examination, applicants will be further assessed on their physical fitness and physical abilities. Fitness requirement is a minimum level of 9.6 on the beep test, while physical abilities are assessed using a number of job specific evolutions.
4. Group Exercise & Interview The final stage of the selection process for applicants successful in the previous stage involves two or three group exercises followed by an individual interview.
The group exercises are designed to assess an applicant's communication skills and their ability to work in a team environment. The interview is largely "knowledge-based" and designed around the initial selection criteria.
All successful applicants will be required to undertake a 16 week Recruit College before beginning operational duties. All operational firefighters work a 10/14 roster.
Pay Rates
Whilst in training, firefighters are paid $1,865.18 per fortnight.
